Finding the Right Storage Unit for Your Needs

Choosing a Storage Unit - Things to Consider

Whether you are moving, relocating or just have too much stuff for your current residence, choosing a storage unit, much like choosing a moving company, can be a daunting task.  It is important that you ask the right questions pertaining to your personal storage needs and to speak with a professional who can point out aspects that you might not have thought about.

Storage units are available in many sizes and options. From just a few boxes to an entire household full of belongings.  While it is helpful that you have a basic idea of the storage unit size you might need, we can help you determine that.

Some Questions to ask when choosing a storage unit

  • Contracts - Some storage facilities require a term contract such as 6 months or a year. If you only need a storage unit for a short duration, it is best to choose a facility that offers month to month.
  • Security - Are the storage units and the facility secure? Are they monitored around the clock?
  • Access - who can access the facility and at what times? Is access restricted to certain hours or days or does the storage facility offer 24/7 access?
  • Climate Controlled - Climate controlled storage units are reccomended for many items such as furniture and electronics. When choosing a facility, they should ask questions about the items you plan to store to ensure your belongings are fully protected. Storing fine art pieces? You definitely will need climate controlled.
  • From smoke alarms to overhead sprinklers - In the case of an emergency or disaster, it is important to know that your items will be protected.
  • The staff - are they professional and friendly?
  • Has the Storage facility had any break ins? Have units suffered attempted break ins or vandalism?
  • Are my items insured against loss?

It is extremely important to speak with a company with several years experience in the storage unit business to ensure that your items will properly protected.

I can see how contracts would be something to watch for. I guess depending on your circumstances, they could be good, or bad. If you know that you are going to be using a storage unit for a long time, you might be able to get a pretty good deal if you sign a contract. http://www.ventuparkstorage.com

Now one thing that I noticed that your article didn't answer for me was if storage units have shelves at all? I would much rather like to organize our storage items to easily come back and grab what I need. I really liked that you mentioned the sizes to consider because this will give us an idea of how much we can store too. Thanks for mentioning the smoke alarms as well! We're going to make sure we have some safety precautions for our storage for sure.

I have to leave the country for a couple years on business. I was thinking that I would be able to get a storage unit, or two to store my things in until I get back. However, it sounds like most storage units only allow you to sign for 6 months to a year. Do you happen to know if some will carry it out as far as two years? I think I'm going to do a little research to find out if there is any facilities that offer longer contracts. http://www.codsllc.com/Delivery/
